Ottawa Family Photography :: Fun at the Park!

This time of year is the time I realize how very fortunate I am to live in the city of Ottawa. I’m sure it’s the case with most Canadian cities, but Mother Nature really enjoys job showing off here this time of year I think. The colour is one thing…but what I think I love most is the light. If we are lucky enough to have a sunny day, the evening light of late summer/early fall is to die for. It creates the illusion of magic, I think. So when I happen to also have a family photo session scheduled, I’m just a leeeetle bit giddy 😉

The Kennedy’s were a lot of fun to work with. With an adorable and newly mobile 12 month old and sweet and energetic 5 year old, I expected that we’d mostly end up with candid photos, but I was very happily surprised that we ended up with a good mix of both candid and posed. We ended up having a lot of fun and by the end of it, I think the kids were both exhausted. Okay, maybe I was too. 😉 A big thank you to the Kennedy Family for spending this lovely evening with me! I hope these photos are ones that your family enjoys for years to come!

Now that we are officially into fall, my schedule is almost full! If you had hoped to book fall family photos and take advantage of this gorgeous weather we’ve been having here in Ottawa, contact me today!

My approach to Newborn Photography :: Ottawa Newborn Photographer

As an adoptive mom, it saddens me that I do not have the memories, even photographically, of when my kids were newborns. This is all part of the deal with non-newborn adoption though. You pretty much know that going in. But in my most personal of thoughts, what I wouldn’t give to have held them, to smell them, to see what those newborn toes looked like and to see how much hair they had. Little, seemingly unimportant things that are so normal for parents to see and experience are things that I will unfortunately never know.

A few years ago I shyed away from newborn photography. I didn’t enjoy it. The trendy thing was (and maybe still is?) to pose babies in various baskets, on blankets etc. wearing various knit hats and diaper covers. And while that’s all well and good and artistic in it’s own right, that’s not my style. It doesn’t draw me in on a personal level and doesn’t feel or look natural to me. And I (stupidly) allowed myself to believe that this was the only way to photograph newborns…or that it was the only way people wanted their babies photographed.

Then I began soul searching a bit.

What is it that I wish I could know about my own children as babies? What do I wish was documented? What is it that I missed? What memories do I ache to have? Then it hit me: Whatever that is, whatever speaks to my own heart is precisely what I need to be capturing for people.

My whole outlook changed. I began offering a different type of newborn photography. One that spent less time fussing and poking and prodding to create the “perfect” moment and more time creating and encouraging situations for natural interactions that I can document. No mater how funny, adorable, intimate, sweet or perfectly imperfect they may be, they are YOUR moments. And at the end of the day, isn’t that what people want to remember most?

My approach to newborn photography

….Those sweet, perfect little curls, toes and tiny fingers that are unique to your little bundle of joy.

….The tender moments of daddy soothing his little princess to sleep.

….The loving smirk a new mom gives a new daddy when she realizes that being a father makes him even more attractive.

….The look of love in mommy’s eyes when she lovingly feeds her baby.

….The connection between two new parents snuggling with their baby on the sofa, realizing that they are the luckiest parents in the world.

I firmly believe that all of these wonderful moments happen whether I am there to capture them or not. But they are memories worth documenting because they are important. They are moments that will be forgotten in an alarmingly short period of time. They are the simple, every day things and experiences that have the power to make us fall deeper in love with each other and the new little families we are creating.

Ottawa Family Photographer :: Six Lovely Sisters

From the moment they all piled out of Marlene’s big black Suburban at Petrie Island, I had a feeling these ladies would be trouble. 😉 Six…yes SIX lovely sisters along with their Mom booked these family photos in celebration of Marlene (who, correct me if I’m wrong is sister number five) and her 50th birthday that happened earlier this month. What I enjoyed most about this session was that these sisters, despite their geographical distance, all seemed so close. Such beautiful relationships they clearly shared. Their laughter was contagious and so were their smiles! What I also loved about this session were the colours they chose and how it made everyone different, but still perfectly coordinated! Kudos to these beautiful ladies for choosing summery colours that photographed so wonderfully! 🙂

A big, big thanks to Marlene, Eileen, Marjorie, Sandra, Marilynn, Diana and Lora-lee for choosing me to document this special visit for you! I hope these memories are ones your family will treasure for years to come!
