My approach to Newborn Photography :: Ottawa Newborn Photographer

As an adoptive mom, it saddens me that I do not have the memories, even photographically, of when my kids were newborns. This is all part of the deal with non-newborn adoption though. You pretty much know that going in. But in my most personal of thoughts, what I wouldn’t give to have held them, to smell them, to see what those newborn toes looked like and to see how much hair they had. Little, seemingly unimportant things that are so normal for parents to see and experience are things that I will unfortunately never know.

A few years ago I shyed away from newborn photography. I didn’t enjoy it. The trendy thing was (and maybe still is?) to pose babies in various baskets, on blankets etc. wearing various knit hats and diaper covers. And while that’s all well and good and artistic in it’s own right, that’s not my style. It doesn’t draw me in on a personal level and doesn’t feel or look natural to me. And I (stupidly) allowed myself to believe that this was the only way to photograph newborns…or that it was the only way people wanted their babies photographed.

Then I began soul searching a bit.

What is it that I wish I could know about my own children as babies? What do I wish was documented? What is it that I missed? What memories do I ache to have? Then it hit me: Whatever that is, whatever speaks to my own heart is precisely what I need to be capturing for people.

My whole outlook changed. I began offering a different type of newborn photography. One that spent less time fussing and poking and prodding to create the “perfect” moment and more time creating and encouraging situations for natural interactions that I can document. No mater how funny, adorable, intimate, sweet or perfectly imperfect they may be, they are YOUR moments. And at the end of the day, isn’t that what people want to remember most?

My approach to newborn photography

….Those sweet, perfect little curls, toes and tiny fingers that are unique to your little bundle of joy.

….The tender moments of daddy soothing his little princess to sleep.

….The loving smirk a new mom gives a new daddy when she realizes that being a father makes him even more attractive.

….The look of love in mommy’s eyes when she lovingly feeds her baby.

….The connection between two new parents snuggling with their baby on the sofa, realizing that they are the luckiest parents in the world.

I firmly believe that all of these wonderful moments happen whether I am there to capture them or not. But they are memories worth documenting because they are important. They are moments that will be forgotten in an alarmingly short period of time. They are the simple, every day things and experiences that have the power to make us fall deeper in love with each other and the new little families we are creating.

Ottawa Family & Newborn Photographer :: Baby Nikola

Being rocked to sleep by Mommy, cuddled by Daddy, held, kissed, loved and cherished. I just can’t imagine a more perfect way to photograph a newborn but in their natural state of sweetness. Believe it or not, there was a time in my career that I envied the photographers who could creatively pose babies in baskets, on blankets or with a wide array of fluffy hats.
I thought that was what newborn photography was and that was all it could really be. But the more time I spent with my clients, talking with them, spending time in their homes, in their lives getting to know them and what they love about the time in their lives right now, the more I realized I was wrong. For me and the clients I work with, I really feel like the most important memories are the ones they are living with their babies right now. While the posed photography creates a different type of art in and of itself (and can be SO beautiful), there is nothing as precious as this moment. And when your babies are grown, what are the type of memories you’ll want to have to look back on? I promise, they will be the ones where the love can be not only seen but also felt. That’s how I knew I had to deliver something different. Something that documented the joy and love in this newly formed family.
Baby Nikola is just such a wonderful baby. At one month old, she was alert, inquisitive and seemed so content with being held by Mommy or Daddy. What I loved most about this session (as with so many newborn sessions) is that feeling that goes along with being in the presence of new love. Ray and Joanne were simply enthralled with this little peanut. Every sound, every face, every movement was perfection. There’s nothing quite as beautiful as seeing this love through the eyes of a new parent. Baby Nikola is a lucky girl to have such kind, attentive parents and as this family continues to bloom I sincerely hope I have the opportunity to work with them again. If Nikola is this adorable NOW, I can only imagine what the future holds 😉

Andrew, Gail and Baby Molly ~ Ottawa Family and Newborn Photography

The first session of 2012! And I couldn’t have asked for a nicer, more lovely family to photograph. With the chaos of having a new baby, I am grateful that they welcomed me into their home to photograph the newest (and first!) addition to their family – baby Molly! First, I have to say that I LOVE her name. It’s totally adorable and is up there amongst my own personal favorites. Molly herself was a delight too. She was awake the entire time and didn’t seem at all phased by cameras or being the star attraction of the day. 😉 Such a beautiful little princess and at just under one month old, its clear as day that she’s got Mommy and Daddy wrapped around that itty bitty finger of hers! 😉

Oh, and did I mention that Barley the cat decided to join the fun? 😉

In-home sessions are quickly becoming one of my favorite ways to photograph families. A big part of the reason is because of the intimacy it creates. Where are you most comfortable? Where are you able to most comfortably be yourselves? Your home of course! And the more I do it, the more I see how this comfort, emotion and intimacy translates visually in my images. If you’ve just had a baby, are expecting a baby or would love to have fun and cozy in-home family session, I’d love to hear from you! I have a special offer I plan to share in a few days so be sure to check back here for those exciting details!!!

Happy New Year everyone!!!
