Ottawa Family Photography :: Baby Dezyn!

What a fantastic weekend! Even though we got some major rain on Saturday, that didn’t stop me from having a fun in-home newborn session with the Rahim family! Their beautiful son Dezyn clearly stole the show – and with good reason! At only 7 weeks old he may take the cake as one of the calmest infants I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. Lots of intense stares and animated facial expressions – and get a load of that amazing head of hair! I love, love, love babies at this age. So much personality emerging!

Another thing I thought was extra special about this session, besides the star himself, was the colourful modern artwork that decorated Alison and Riyad’s home. I was so impressed to learn that these two have personally created the majority of the artwork that decorates the walls, including a beautiful personalized piece for Dezyn! I love that we were able to incorporate a bit of their art in the backgrounds of these photos. I think it gives them that extra special personal touch!

Lifestyle newborn photos are such a fun, authentic way of capturing a new family. This style of newborn photography is my favourite as it really shows the beauty in real life moments and tells a story of where the family’s life is at right now. Because these photos illustrate real life, I find that they work best displayed in an album and/or a DVD slideshow.

Thank you again Rahim family for having me into your home to photograph your sweet little family! I sincerely enjoyed spending the morning documenting the love the three of you share. I hope we have the opportunity to work together again in the future!

My approach to Newborn Photography :: Ottawa Newborn Photographer

As an adoptive mom, it saddens me that I do not have the memories, even photographically, of when my kids were newborns. This is all part of the deal with non-newborn adoption though. You pretty much know that going in. But in my most personal of thoughts, what I wouldn’t give to have held them, to smell them, to see what those newborn toes looked like and to see how much hair they had. Little, seemingly unimportant things that are so normal for parents to see and experience are things that I will unfortunately never know.

A few years ago I shyed away from newborn photography. I didn’t enjoy it. The trendy thing was (and maybe still is?) to pose babies in various baskets, on blankets etc. wearing various knit hats and diaper covers. And while that’s all well and good and artistic in it’s own right, that’s not my style. It doesn’t draw me in on a personal level and doesn’t feel or look natural to me. And I (stupidly) allowed myself to believe that this was the only way to photograph newborns…or that it was the only way people wanted their babies photographed.

Then I began soul searching a bit.

What is it that I wish I could know about my own children as babies? What do I wish was documented? What is it that I missed? What memories do I ache to have? Then it hit me: Whatever that is, whatever speaks to my own heart is precisely what I need to be capturing for people.

My whole outlook changed. I began offering a different type of newborn photography. One that spent less time fussing and poking and prodding to create the “perfect” moment and more time creating and encouraging situations for natural interactions that I can document. No mater how funny, adorable, intimate, sweet or perfectly imperfect they may be, they are YOUR moments. And at the end of the day, isn’t that what people want to remember most?

My approach to newborn photography

….Those sweet, perfect little curls, toes and tiny fingers that are unique to your little bundle of joy.

….The tender moments of daddy soothing his little princess to sleep.

….The loving smirk a new mom gives a new daddy when she realizes that being a father makes him even more attractive.

….The look of love in mommy’s eyes when she lovingly feeds her baby.

….The connection between two new parents snuggling with their baby on the sofa, realizing that they are the luckiest parents in the world.

I firmly believe that all of these wonderful moments happen whether I am there to capture them or not. But they are memories worth documenting because they are important. They are moments that will be forgotten in an alarmingly short period of time. They are the simple, every day things and experiences that have the power to make us fall deeper in love with each other and the new little families we are creating.

Ottawa Newborn Photographer :: The Paciga Family

Ahh newborn babies. Every time I’m fortunate enough to photograph a family with a new wee one I’m reminded of how lovely they are and how nothing can really compare with the feeling of being new parents. Rosalind and Mat were naturals. Every interaction I witnessed between parents and baby was sweet, loving and as if they’d been doing it for years. Baby Nathan is a very lucky boy. 🙂

This lovely family were actually supposed to be birth photography clients of mine, however, due to Rosalind being induced a couple of weeks earlier than expected and myself being 4 hours out of town at the time, it didn’t quite happen the way we had initially planned! The good news though is that Mom and baby are doing wonderfully and all are settling into their new roles as a family of three. I was very grateful to have been invited in to document this time for them and I really think the love and connection between them shows through in the images.

Thank you Mat, Rosalind and baby Nathan for the pleasure of meeting and photographing the three of you!
