Equestrian Photography is something new for me, and after this photo session with Emily at Millar Brooke Farm in Perth, Ontario – I’m absolutely, positively hooked!
Emily contacted me recently as she really wanted some photos to document her horses Teddy and Frenchie and the relationship that she shares with them. She puts in many hours training with these guys and has clearly developed a bond that was apparent from the moment we met. As with all of my subjects, connection is what it’s all about for me. Finding a way to capture that bond is crucial to a successful shoot – especially when there are animals involved. My approach with this session was just to give general direction to Emily about where to sit, stand etc. and just to have her interact with Teddy and Frenchie in a way that was natural and comfortable for everyone. With this approach, the photos turned out exactly as we had both hoped 🙂
In my entire photography career, this is one of those sessions that really stands out for me. Having the opportunity to capture these images on this stunning property with the golden sunlight streaming through the trees was….perfection. As an animal lover, I was also completely enthralled with the horses themselves and their unique personalities. Thank you Emily for trusting me with this. I sincerely hope we have the opportunity to do it again some day and I’ll be watching for you at the Olympics some day! 😉
If you live in Ottawa or surrounding area and are interested in a set of professional photos with your own horse(s), I’d love to hear from you! I am currently booking equine photography in Ottawa year round as this is an area of photography I’d love to expand on.
