Ottawa Family Photographer :: The Kirke Family

Firstly, I must apologize! I’m soooo behind on my blogging! I’m hoping to get caught up with past sessions over the next few days/week though so be sure to check back for lots more family sessions!
What a super fun time it was at the Arboretum here in Ottawa with the Kirke family! What I thought was neat was that they had visited the Arboretum prior to getting together with me for their photos and the girls had pre-scouted the area for things that they loved. They knew where all of the nice spots were, including the trees perfect for climbing! Of course, they were MORE than eager to show me what they liked and in the case of Margaret (the youngest of the two) she was MORE than happy to show me exactly how she liked to pose. 😉 It was a lot of fun, and what made it even better was the addition of their 5 month old Goldendoodle named Hugo. Hugo is definitely up there with one of the most beautiful dogs I’ve ever photographed!

Thanks so much Kirke family for choosing me to capture the fun on this afternoon with the four of you and Hugo! I hope you guys enjoyed yourselves as much as I did and I sincerely hope we have the opportunity to work together again in the future!

Ottawa Family Photographer :: The Upton Family

I love that Summer is here. Maybe not officially, but we’ve had so many lovely days that have been perfect for shooting that I feel extremely lucky! This lovely family I had the pleasure of photographing two weekends ago. The Upton’s came to me inquiring about booking a family photo session as their son Max would soon be headed off to school out West. I thought this was a fantastic idea. Once kids reach this teen age and they all begin heading in new and different ways, it’s so nice commemorate it while everyone it still living under one roof. And as always…I was so flattered that they asked me. 🙂

I am just so completely thrilled with how these images came out too. We had fun, they brought their dog Cleo (who provided us with many laughs as you’ll see below!) and everyone was just so easy going and laid back. That’s why I love family photography as much as I do. Moments like this just happen. There is no rush. Connections are made organically. And laughter is always genuine. 🙂 Funny enough, one of my very favorite images is one that you’ll find at the end of this post. As I was going through the photos after the session I came across it and couldn’t bring myself to discard it. Perhaps it’ll never be a giant canvas hanging on a living room wall, but to me it spoke volumes. Not only about the fun we were having, but again, what I love so much about being a family photographer. As we were trying to get everyone situated for a photo, their Standard Poodle Cleo decide to mosey on in front of the camera. Just sitting. Chilling out. Of course, we all burst into laughter (myself included) and I couldn’t resist snapping. A split second decision on my part but the genuine expressions captured on everyone’s face make it an image that will stick in my mind for a very long time to come. 🙂

Thank you so much to the Upton family for trusting me with your family’s memories. I am truly grateful to have met all of you and I wish you all the best!

Ottawa Family Photographer :: The Walsh Family

When JoAnne contacted me a few weeks back, I know it was with a heavy heart. Her email explained that their family had a dog who was suffering from some health complications and that they weren’t sure how much longer they had with her. What touched me most was that they wanted this family photo session to happen so that they could document their time with Lucy, since they knew that there was a possibility that she would not be around long. So we booked the session and I anxiously anticipated meeting them!

Last Sunday, the 6 of us and Lucy, the white Boxer, met down at the Arboretum and Ornamental Gardens here in Ottawa for our session. We spent some time walking the grounds and enjoyed the GORGEOUS weather we’ve been having. The kids were wonderful and fun, the moments were perfect, Lucy was sweet and very well behaved – we really couldn’t have asked for a better day. On my way home, as always, I was feeling very grateful that this family had contacted me for this. With two dogs of my own that I love dearly, I am always especially touched when someone decides to include their pets in their family session. In this case, even more so knowing that Lucy’s health was declining and that these photos would mean so much to this family.

On Monday morning, the day after our session, I received an email from JoAnne thanking me so much for the session….and letting me know that Lucy had passed. I was shocked. As I sat in my car preparing to meet a friend for lunch that day, I got tears in my eyes as soon as I read it. Less than 24 hours and Lucy was gone. It was almost like she waited. Her health held on long enough to give her family the gift of these precious memories. Gosh…my eyes even well up with tears as I type this. Because it’s stories like this that remind me why I do what I do. They reinforce how truly valuable our time together is with the people and animals that we love. I’m certain that I will never forget the story of Lucy and her family and how fate made it all happen when it did. Lucy was such a lucky dog to have owners who loved her so much. And what a lucky family to have a dog who left them with such a valuable gift.

Thank you so very much Walsh family for choosing me to capture this for you. Big hugs to all of you as you deal with the loss of your sweet dog. xo
