Ottawa Family Photographer :: The Walsh Family

When JoAnne contacted me a few weeks back, I know it was with a heavy heart. Her email explained that their family had a dog who was suffering from some health complications and that they weren’t sure how much longer they had with her. What touched me most was that they wanted this family photo session to happen so that they could document their time with Lucy, since they knew that there was a possibility that she would not be around long. So we booked the session and I anxiously anticipated meeting them!

Last Sunday, the 6 of us and Lucy, the white Boxer, met down at the Arboretum and Ornamental Gardens here in Ottawa for our session. We spent some time walking the grounds and enjoyed the GORGEOUS weather we’ve been having. The kids were wonderful and fun, the moments were perfect, Lucy was sweet and very well behaved – we really couldn’t have asked for a better day. On my way home, as always, I was feeling very grateful that this family had contacted me for this. With two dogs of my own that I love dearly, I am always especially touched when someone decides to include their pets in their family session. In this case, even more so knowing that Lucy’s health was declining and that these photos would mean so much to this family.

On Monday morning, the day after our session, I received an email from JoAnne thanking me so much for the session….and letting me know that Lucy had passed. I was shocked. As I sat in my car preparing to meet a friend for lunch that day, I got tears in my eyes as soon as I read it. Less than 24 hours and Lucy was gone. It was almost like she waited. Her health held on long enough to give her family the gift of these precious memories. Gosh…my eyes even well up with tears as I type this. Because it’s stories like this that remind me why I do what I do. They reinforce how truly valuable our time together is with the people and animals that we love. I’m certain that I will never forget the story of Lucy and her family and how fate made it all happen when it did. Lucy was such a lucky dog to have owners who loved her so much. And what a lucky family to have a dog who left them with such a valuable gift.

Thank you so very much Walsh family for choosing me to capture this for you. Big hugs to all of you as you deal with the loss of your sweet dog. xo

Ottawa Pet Photographer ~ Peanut

My family has two dogs. The older of the two is Emma. A full-bred, loyal, sweet, super diva Pug. The younger of the two is Peanut. An extra tiny Pug/Shih-Tzu mix who is hyper, full of personality and borderline nuts. At 1.5  years old, she’s still as Puppy-ish as they come in both looks and activity level. And as a result, Peanut and I have a complicated relationship. I love her dearly….but I’m sure I could put my kids through college if I tallied up the dollar value of the things this dog has single handedly destroyed. 😉

This is the first real opportunity I’ve had to photograph Peanut. Typically when I get down to her level to take a photo I end up with a dog lunging at the camera, thinking that I must be crouching down to play. A couple of days ago I just happened to have my camera ready just before she decided to go for a nap though. I quietly approached her, sat down ever so softly on the floor in front of her and was able to snap a few photos while she was still relatively groggy. I, of course, did not have the opportunity to clean the gunk out of her eyes or bathe her in preparation for her blog debut, but this shows you the real Peanut. The true face of the little dog that brings us so much stress…err…I mean joy. 😉

I’m grateful that I did seize this opportunity. Our dogs are very much a part of our families and our every day life, yet sadly they both end up forgotten when it comes to pictures. I hope to spend more time photographing our furry family members this year. Animals are only with us for such an incredibly short time, yet they have the ability to make such an impact on our lives. I never want my kids to forget the faces and personalities of the animals who’s lives have helped shape theirs. That’s why photography is so wonderful. It allows us to never forget.

Lauren, Shayla and Max ~ Ottawa Dog Photographer

You may remember Lauren and Shayla from our session last year…..well, I’m pleased to share with you that they have a brand new addition! That’s right…Max, the 4 pound, 5 month old Chihuahua puppy recently came home and as you can see from the photos, is certainly getting a lot of TLC from these two! On top of Max being super adorable, he was also very sweet natured and super cuddly. I absolutely loved his markings too – so unique!

Thank you so much Lauren and Shayla for contacting me for the second year in a row AND allowing me the opportunity to photograph yourselves and your sweet new dog! Enjoy puppyhood! 😉
